The workshop is aimed to address the issues related to the current water quality management frameworks in India and the EU/UK. We will discuss the challenges faced by the regulators with respect to grabbing sampling and continuous monitoring of various contaminants.
Contaminants such as non-polar and polar (pesticides, pharmaceuticals and personal care products) organics, nutrients and heavy metals enter surface water bodies from both point sources (direct discharges) and non-point sources (runoff). To prevent/manage the surface water quality, catchment-based management solutions are the key. At present, the water quality data generated from grab samples/spot samples is used to inform and regulate surface water quality management plans. Various studies have shown that spot sampling does not capture the diurnal, monthly and seasonal variations, particularly where concentrations of pollutants fluctuate or are not homogenous. This can potentially generate misleading information on which management and remediation decisions are based.
The workshop will present case studies about the use of passive sampling devices (PSDs) for the collection of data to aid in the improvement of catchment-based water quality management programmes.
